Random Drug Testing on Harness Races

Updated: August 1, 2007
horseHarness racing horses at county fairs across the state are now being tested for drugs. The state tested several horses at the Coles County Fair in Charleston just this week. The goal is to keep the sport clean and keep everyone on a level playing field. Those who take part in harness racing say the random checks are a good idea. Bill Gross, a racing judge, says, "If you're using drugs to win races, you're stealing money from the other trainers drivers and owners. It's as simple as that. You're a thief because you're using an unfair advantage to get that." The state has already tested horses at about ten county fairs. Only one has turned up positive. Trainers who violate the rules can be fined and even suspended from racing.
