Dog Fighting Champaign-Urbana

Updated: July 26, 2007
Local animal officials say even they're surprised by the big dog fighting problem in Champaign-Urbana. Animal control arrested an Urbana man for the brutal sport just yesterday. The Champaign County Humane Society is now using the national attention on dog fighting in hopes of changing the growing trend here. Quarterback Michael Vick pleaded not guilty to running a fighting ring Thursday. Prosecutors say he tortured animals and bet on brutal contests for six years. The Champaign County Humane Society says that same thing happens here quite a bit. It's taken in several animals it says were used as bait in such fights. To raise awareness about the problem, the humane society posted information on its website.
