Two Brothers Save Kids From Fire

Updated: July 16, 2007
DECATUR- A near tragedy in Decatur turned two brothers into heroes.  They pulled four children from a burning house. in the 14-hundred block of east Cantrell Street.
The brothers were driving home from a fishing trip when they saw the blaze and stopped to call 9-1-1. But.. they said they couldn't wait for firefighters to arrive.. knowing four young children were sleeping inside.
When you look at the house today it's hard to believe anyone made it out. Luckily.. Brad and Brian Burns happened to be driving by. They first ran to the front door but smoke was pouring out. They got into the house through the back..
Inside they found.. two children ages two and eleven were sleeping on the couch and two other children asleep in a back room.
The Burns know their split-second decision to rush in is why those children are alive today.
Brian Burns knows it was the right decision, "If we would have just waited a few minutes or even waited for the fire department, they said they probably would have been planning 4 funerals so it was just a matter of a few minutes and the house was engulfed."
The mother of the children was not home at the time. Her boyfriend had just left to go to the store and when he came back the house was on fire.. we don't know what caused it. The red cross is helping the family.
The brothers say they feel so lucky to have been at the right place at the right time. The children's mother says they are truly her angels.
