Crane and worker shortage
Updated: July 6, 2007
Even as construction for homes slows down, cranes can't seem to keep up with the demand for high rises. Most anywhere you look in Champaign and Urbana, you'll probably see the heavy machinery.
If you just look at the skyline in Champaign, it's hard to miss one of these, a crane, and chances are you'll see more of them in the next few weeks.
Don Fair is part of the crane company working on the Burnham Project, but that's not all locally. " We do a lot of high rises, garages, finish the job go to the next job and do that." He doesn't have to go far. His next job is just one street over. His team just got hired to work on the Green Street high rise apartments. They will be the tallest in the city.
Alex Ruggieri specializes in commerical construction. Despite a slowdown in homes going up, he says commercial is just the opposite for one simple reason. "There's more demand, I know I've been working with quite a few developers looking for land, finding it difficult to find land," he explains.
It doesn't seem like that will change anytime soon. More cranes are expected to go up as developments rise in Champaign and Urbana.
