breaking news
(CHAMPAIGN)---It may be something thats happened to you before. Youre driving down the highway when youre distracted by your kids unbuckling themselves from their safety restraints. That scenario turned into a near nightmare for one Champaign family Wednesday night when the driver of a mini-van van lost control and flipped over while trying to make sure her three year old got back in her seat.
Buckling up is a routine one mother made sure to get her child into after he once unbuckled himself while she was driving.
"We made it a point to tell them you cant be unbuckled." Says Becky Woklen "They tend to stay buckled because we can tell them what can happen if we get in an accident."
Mother of two Amy Craig agrees, "Just have to make sure that we buckle the top one and then the bottom one...because shes our precious cargo and we want to make sure nothing happens to her."
Child safety experts recommend a specific seat for toddlers.
"The five point harness is what youll commonly see in a child seat, where you have the harness straps." Says Safe Kids Champaign member Susan Butler "They go across the shoulders and across the hips."
For older children who weigh more than 40 pounds, Butler says to use a booster seat.
