Updated: June 26, 2007
The man behind a cross-town crime spree Sunday causes a stir in court saying he regrets he didn't do more.Torriano Johnson faces 13 charges including attempted murder.
The violence was aimed at Johnson's ex-girlfriend who asked not to be identified. In court today, Prosecutors laid out Johnson's interview with police. In that interview, he said he regrets he didn't kill his ex-girlfriend. He chased his ex-girlfriend and her sister Sunday. Police say he shot at them several times and missed.
In court today, the Judge read the charges against Johnson and he kept interrupting. At one point Johnson said "I'm pleading guilty to everything, it should be easy for you." He interrupted the judge again saying. " I'm guilty of all the other charges but one." He said he wasn't trying to kill the victim's sister.
When asked about a lawyer, Johnson said he didn't need one because he figures he's going to prison. Regardless of Johnson's statements, his lawyer entered a plea of not guilty.
As you may remember, Johnson also stole a cell phone and car at gunpoint at the U of I. He also lead police on a chase.. and investigators say he shot at them. Johnson ended up in a house in West Champaign where he took 2 hostages and later surrendered. His bond was set at three million dollars. Again, no one was hurt during the four hour crime spree.
In court.. it seemed Johnson just wanted to get everything done quickly. He does have a criminal record. He spent time in prison on county and federal drug charges. Back in April the same ex-girlfriend filed a compliant he assault her.
