Chief fall out
Updated: June 15, 2007
Four months after Chief Illiniwek danced his last dance fans can no longer get one of a kind memorabilia.Today was the last day manufacturers could ship Chief t-shirts, sweaters and other items if stores didn't order it before mid-april; and that has some in Champaign turning away customers.
Sandra Hartman is on a hunt to find Chief shirts for her family. "My daughter who lives out of the state is a huge fan and when I saw on the news they were going on, I decided I better go see what i can find." She doesn't have to go far to find choices.
At the Te Shurt store in Champaign, the shelves are fully stocked, with more shipments through the Fall. But lately, shop owner Michele Fassett has been turning away people wanting customized chief logos on their clothing. " We actually had a gentlemen come in Tuesday I think that brought his own golf and he wanted it embroidered and I told him we couldn't do it anymore."
The bad news, the deadline for new Chief orders was back in April. The good news, you can customize shirts with the Chief already on it. Shoppers like Hartman feel, even when Chief shirts are sold out, they won't really be gone.
" It's the symbol behind it, it's not the merchandise it's the Chief, and thats not going away."
If you're also looking to customize shirts with the word Chief, your can't unless your ordered it back in April. The University trademarked the word.
