DECATUR- Local businesses are pitching in to keep kids from cutting class in Decatur. It's part of a new truancy-fighting campaign.
Project success says keeping kids in school is a city-wide problem...And everyone from parents...To local businesses...To even the mayor should step up. The group is praising CVS pharmacy for being the first place to refuse selling to kids during school hours. It's just one idea that's come out of a series of round table discussions to keep kids in the classroom.
Last year in one day 200 9th graders were missing from school a problem that project success says belongs to the whole community.
"If we can accomplish that and get the business community and other people behind this campaign it could be very effective and just sending that message," says Project Success Director Jane Shade, "When school starts you'll be in school and stay there."
Another idea is educating parents about the law. They run the chance of being charged with neglect if their kids skip class. The police chief is also playing an active role and says officers will stop kids during the day and find out why they're not at school.
Letters are being sent to businesses around schools to encourage them to support this truancy prevention campaign.
