Vermilion Co. EPA Study

Updated: June 5, 2007

People in one Vermilion County town are worried for their safety after a recent EPA study shows a site in Hegeler must be cleaned up to protect the people who live there. The EPA says the Hegeler zinc superfund does not present any immediate health risk but neighbors do worry about long term threats. A zinc smelter operated on the site from 1906 through 1955. Now the land contains amounts of lead, arsenic, and zinc. One neighbor we spoke with said her family had been in town for five years and she wonders if she's already seen the effects. "We have animals and we've lived here for five years. Our dog just had to be put to sleep yesterday because of tumors and I wonder if that has something to do with it," said Hegeler resident, Donna Elliott. "It's not very good." The EPA will have residents in town to answer questions about the study and and any concerns neighbors may have at a meeting next Tuesday at the Westville Library. EPA Meeting Tuesday, June 12th Westville Public Library 7-9pm
