DECATUR- The flamingo exhibit is re-opening more than two years after kids broke into Decatur's Scovill zoo and killed a family of birds. Two flamingos and one white pelican were found dead in 2004, their remains put in nearby mailboxes.
Scovill zoo is now home to 11 Chilean flamingos and one white pelican.
This is all possible after years of fundraising from school kids and people in the community. Each flamingo costs around 25-thousand dollars.
The zoo says it's made some changes to make sure their new birds are safe.
Director Mike Borders says,  "just on our toes a little more. You think these tragic things will never happen to you but when they do it really makes you think and that's why we built this very secure building. Every night we bring the flamingos in when the zoo closes."  And they'll bring them back out to the exhibit every morning when the zoo opens. The exhibit was built in hopes of breeding the birds because they are an endangered animal. The exhibit officially opens tonight with pink snow cones and cotton candy... Everyone is welcome to come celebrate the zoo's feathered friends.
