School leaders in Urbana are speaking out about the importance of playing it safe on buses after an incident that sent a 13-year-old passenger to the hospital Monday in Urbana.
The Urbana Sheriffs Department said the passenger got off the bus then reached back into the door as it was taking off. That made him fall to the ground.
Officers say he is fine. He was treated and released from the hospital with no serious injuries.
Urbana school leaders say this is why they make it a priority to teach children how to ride a bus safely.
Urbana Middle School Principal, Nancy Clinton says a third of that schools population rides MTD buses each day.
She says they start off teaching incoming fifth graders about playing it safe and following the rules. They then talk about it several times throughout the year.
"We try to break them in completely our way," said Clinton.
"We run eight MTD buses every day to and from school and thats a lot. Thats more than anybody in town because were a big building so weve got to indoctrinate our kids on how to ride and how to ride safely."
Clinton went on to say that most of their kids do indeed play it safe each day on the buses.
