Champaign County Man faces tougher charges in Urbana shooting
Updated: May 14, 2007
Tony Mann was in court today for attempted murder. Urbana police say he shot Robert Moore In the back last Wednesday. It happened across the street from Martin Luther King Elementary School.Prosecutors charged Mann with two more counts today, one that could give him a life sentence if he's convicted. That larger sentence is attempted murder with the intent to kill. The second charge is aggravated discharge of a firearm.
The shooting happened in a mini-park across from King Elementary. Neighbors say it's a popular spot for people to hang out and that's causing some trouble. They say young adults hang out all hours of the day, playing music loudly and using vulgar language. Neighbors say with last week's shooting, they've had enough. They're asking Urbana City Council tonight to close this mini-park.
Neighbor Rosalind Lewis is circulating the petition saying, "something needed to be done ok, reality check this has happened, we don't want to see it happen again and we want a safe neighborhood." About 50 neighbors and community groups signed the petition. Lewis says there's a bigger park around the corner for people to hang out in. She is hoping the Council will change the mini-park to residential property.
