Educators rally for funding

Updated: May 3, 2007
Some educators say the lack of funding is such a problem that they support the biggest tax hike proposal in state history to get more school funding. In Springfield, teachers say some students are learning from outdated textbooks and thats not fair for their future. Today thousands of teachers, parents and students marched through the streets of downtown Springfield in hopes that lawmakers would hear their cries for help. Ralliers say the biggest problem is that funding is not equally distributed across the state. And some say theyd support the gross receipts salex tax on small businesses if it means the kids will get a better education. Others say the GRT needs work before theyd support it. "I do know that its a viable plan that seems to fit in with a way to fund education appropriately. But if theres a better way..more power to us to find it and use it. I think thats what the legislators jobs are," says Springfield teacher Mary McDonald.
