TrolleyDecatur200x130large2007-04-26-1177627955.gifDECATUR- People in Decatur are "voting" on whether they'd like to keep a tradition rolling.. in the downtown. The city's sent out 35-hundred surveys to hear what you think about the trolleys.
It's become a familiar site in Decatur's downtown...The *free trolley has been riding down the streets for six years.
Decatur's mayor Paul Osborne says, "there's always been a debate over the trolleys. How to use them, a lot of time people don't see a lot of people on them, are they a waste of money?"
They are questions being sent out to the community to figure out, will the trolleys stay or will they go?
And everyone has their opinion. Some people on the street said,
"it has an affect of ambiance so hopefully it's an effective marketing tool for Decatur."
"i don't see many people on them at all, that's why sometimes i think it's kinda a waste."
The decatur transit center knows ridership is a problem. That's why it wants to know what can be done better to save the trolley.
The Mass Transit Administrator Paul McChancey says, "we hope that people have good suggestions on where the trolley should go perhaps a new route or just any kind o fdifferent use for it."
The city has even thought about buying the trolleys from the state so they could be rented out for private parties or historical tours of the city.
The city hopes this survey gives new life for the trolley. Osborne says, "I think the best use of the trolley is ahead of us.">>
