Rate Freeze Death Threats

Updated: April 25, 2007
An Ameren customer may have gone too far when he got a skyrocketing power bill. Illinois State Police are investigating death threats against lawmakers. While electric rates continue to double and triple ... Lawmakers refuse to agree on any help. Making a choice between putting food on the table or forking over enough money to keep the lights on ... Some senators say can cause people to go over the deep-end. Thats why Illinois State Police are investigating phone call threats to Senate President Emil Jones. As a powerhouse leader ... Hes blocked a rate freeze plan for Ameren and Commonwealth Edison customers. The hold up .. including ComEd in the rate freeze ... But Speaker Michael Madigan wants it statewide. Southern Illinois Senator Gary Forby is a leader for the freeze .. he tells WCFN My News at 9 he wasnt directly threatened but the caller could be from southern Illinois. So he wants to make sure everyone is protected ... And rate relief comes soon. "This electric bill, it makes people nervous and this guy sounded like he was more nervous than most people and we dont nobody to do anything suicidal or anything like that. That was the main reason to call the state police and check." Said Sen. Gary Forby, (D-Benton). "Should they be threatened? Of course not. Thats beyond belief. But the President has bottled up the issue in the Senate." Said Sen. Larry Bomke, (R-Springfield). The one-year rate freeze including *only Ameren is now in the House. Lawmakers are set to debate the issue in committee tomorrow .. perhaps ComEd could be included ... But that means were back to square one ... Jones wont approve it. Ameren says theyll go bankrupt if a rate freeze passes. But in the meantime... The Franklin County States Attorney is reviewing the threats ... That report is expected to be released by Friday.
