White's Bond Reduced
Updated: April 13, 2007
A McLean County judge decided, Friday, to reduce Jon White's bond. Police say White abused nine girls in Urbana, while teaching at Thomas Paine Elementary. He's also charged with assaulting two students in McLean County. White wanted to reduce his bond from one-million dollars, to $500,000. But the state didn't want that to happen. So they tried to introduce new DNA evidence to keep bond where it's at. The judge said he wouldn't accept that new evidence because it wasn't relevant to the case in McLean County. But he did decide to reduce bond to $750,000. It's not what White's attorney's were hoping for. They said it should be lower, because White isn't a threat to the community. The state said he's a "serial pedophile" who needs to be in prison until trial. The judge decided since bond in Champaign County is at one-million dollars, and white faces more charges there, bond should be a little less in McLean County.
White was brought back to Champaign County after his hearings here today. His attorneys say they want a change of venue for both trials. They say there's been too much negative publicity, and they want White to have a fair trial.
White's attorneys say even though his bond was lowered slightly in McLean County, they aren't sure his family will be able to post bail. He still faces a one-million dollar bond in Champaign County.
