Urbana School Board Write-In

Updated: April 11, 2007
educationNeighbors in North Urbana want to make sure they have a voice on the school board. When they recently saw nobody in the running for the sub-district one seat in next week's election, they prompted one of their own to join the race. Brenda Carter will be their write in candidate come Tuesday. She declared her intent to run on Wednesday. Carter has spent twenty years as an early childhood teacher and volunteers at area schools. She says District 116 is a great district and she wants to involve the public in school issues. Neighbors say when they needed the spot filled, they immediately thought of Carter. "I was very upset to see there was nobody there and I thought of Brenda," says Rosemary Laughlin of Urbana."She is very concerned about the schools and has children at all three levels." There is still time for others to jump in the race. County Clerk Mark Sheldon says if nobody had stepped up to fill the seat, it would then be up to the school board to appoint someone to that position. But neighbors say they believe Carter is the best choice for the seat.
