Tonight.. District 186 schools have a new superintendent..
Walter Milton Junior accepted the school boards offer..
Milton will be the districts first African American superintendent.
Board leaders say its his experience that unanimously won over his opponent ... Deborah Wortham ... An academic officer from Baltimore City Public Schools.
As a superintendent for a little under two years in Flint, Michigan... Milton faced much resistance with his gender based schools ... And shutting some down as well.
WCFN spoke with the Flint board president ... Who had nothing but praise for Milton ...Saying on a four point scale ... The board gave him a 3.4.
Although an all African American boys school failed in Springfield ... District 186 board president hopes Milton can revive boys and girls schools in Springfield.
"For some boys I think it would probably be very beneficial as well as girls. I am more familiar with boys because I have two boys. But I think girls, girls have their own sets of issues that they are dealing with as they grow up as well." Said District 186 Board President, Cheryl Wise.
The district says that parents and educators shouldnt worry about Miltons past.
He once hired a friend as a consultant ... Who turned out to be an accused sexual predator ... Those charges were later dropped.
But Milton says he forced Anthony Julius to resign immediately.
He also brought this out in the open to both the board and when he met with the community last night.
WCFN spoke with Milton on Friday who says hes accepted the job ... And wants to the ground running first by walking the streets and meeting the community.
However the contract hasnt been finalized.
The board hopes to have negotiations wrapped up by wedensday ... Youll also find out if the board offered the full salary of 220 thousand dollars a year.
Milton is still under a four-year contract with Flint ... But Milton says he has an out thats negotiable with that board.
