capitolCalling it an crisis, Lt. Gov. Quinn wants lawmakers to return to Springfield to deal with skyrocketing power bills. But can he convince the governor to call a special session? Quinn says Blagojevich doesn't quite have his priorities in line right now. This week Blagojevich has been touring the state, touting a tax hike. And Quinn says his mind should be on re-instating the electric rate freeze. Quinn wants the governor to call for a special session within the next week. With that, Quinn hopes lawmakers could re-instate a rate freeze for Ameren utility customers. Lawmakers are on spring break right now. And the Senate did not vote on the rate freeze before they left town; it already passed the House. So now Quinn wants Blagojevich to take charge. Quinn says, "I think the governor needs to intervene on behalf of the people of Illinois, almost 13-million consumers. And say here's a blue print and here's where we're going. That kinda of strong leadership that we have seen from other chief executives, presidents and mayors and governors. I think is desperately needed right now." Meanwhile, Blagojevich says if it were up to him electric rates would already be frozen. And he's frustrated that the legislature hasn't given him any kind of bill to sign on the freeze.
