Lightning Strikes Macon Plant
Updated: April 5, 2007
MACON- Firefighters were called to the plant off of route 51 this afternoon. Their main goal was keeping the propane tanks cool while trying not to get water on the fertilizer, which could cause run off and contaminate city property and water. Evergreen FS sells agriculture products to farmers. The building that burnt down held dry fertilizer which made fighting the fire even more difficult. Fire fighters had to wait for the fertilizer fire to burn out.
Several propane tanks sat just feet away from the flames. f those propane tanks had been heated it would have been very dangerous. One firefighter said they could have blown up like a missile.
Luckily that did not happen and no one was hurt at the plant.
Route 51 was closed because of the heavy smoke blowing across the highway making it too dangerous for drivers.
