Minorities in the Workforce

Business leaders say we cant rely on state jobs to bring in dollars for Springfield. So its working to grow and keep other businesses in the Capitol City. And theres a growing focus on minority businesses. Reviving the east side ... Like at The Old South Town Theater ... Is a major project for the city and the long lived neighbors. But making minorities feel welcomed in Springfield ... Is another matter. Monday, economic leaders at the citizens club forum .. talked about jobs and the work theyve achieved at attracting jobs ... Even those for minorities. But one thing that sticks out ... Some leaders say theres a social problem ... Once minorities are in the door with their job .. they dont feel welcomed in Springfield ... And its trickling down to kids wanting to leave. "Its going to require people going back into their own communities and understanding when you talk about quality of life, worforce development. If youre going to attract minorities, those factors are going to have to be addressed almost specifically and uniquely to that particular group." said Springfield Black Chamber of Commerce President, Tom Dorsey. Dorsey also says if the city cant get enough qualified African-Americans to work in Springfield ... Like on the the new power plant ... They should be willing to reach outside the city for those jobs. There hasnt been a plan in place as to how the city can keep minority jobs ... But leaders do admit theres a problem. So they say this million dollar Quantum 5-year investment will help address some of the issues.
