St. Patrick's Day Safety Checks

Updated: March 18, 2007
patrolsCHAMPAIGN - It was a night of partying for some, but for police St. Patrick's Day is all about business. State and local police set up shop in Champaign to catch drunk drivers.

In just over four hours almost 300 drivers went through the safety check. Police weren't just looking for party-goers that took the celebration on the road, they were also checking for valid driver's license and proof of insurance.

During the safety check 70 citations were issued, and 30 written warnings were given. There were also two DUI's and six criminal arrests.

Officers say they don't want to rain on anyone's holiday, but say drivers need to think before they get behind the wheel.
