CHAMPAIGN -- Contractors from all over the world were in town Wednesday to make sure all our buildings are safe. At the meeting, dozens discussed sprinkler safety.

Contractors talked about codes all buildings should have for fire safety; to make sure sprinklers are up-to-date. The man leading the meeting called 911 for the fire on Main and Church streets years ago.

"That's one of the reasons why it's so important to us to make sure these systems are maintained. While that system wasn't in service yet, there was going to be a sprinkler system in that building. A local company designed it and was installing it before the fire happened," Cecil Bilbo said.

Contractors from Mexico to Canada gave input on sprinkler safety. Some of those rules were created by one of Champaign's very own.

Fire Chief Douglas Forsman helped create fire codes used all over the world. He was in the National Fire Protection Association for several years.
