SPRINGFIELD -- Governor Quinn is taking charge in the fight against youth violence. He says it's happening too often.

Early Monday, Quinn laid out a plan to better use resources already in the state to keep kids safe. In Illinois, homicide is the second-leading killer for people 10 - 24. But, Quinn says even once violence-related death is too many.

He wants Illinois to do whatever it can to play its part in cutting those statistics down. That means getting more kids into mentoring programs, before and after school, and into summer jobs.

Quinn also says a big part of reducing crime is stricter gun laws. He's pushing for a ban on assault-style weapons, hoping it will cut down on the number of kids getting hurt. He also wants a ban to cut down on violence in general across the state.
