Weinstein earns weekly gymnastics honor

CHAMPAIGN, Ill.
(UI Release) - Third time's a charm for Alina Weinstein as the University of
Illinois senior earned her third Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honor this
afternoon. The announcement comes
on the heels of Weinstein breaking multiple records last weekend at the
State of Illinois Classic, including on the vault and in the
all-around.
Last
Saturday, Weinstein became just the second Illinois gymnast to score a
perfect 10. The New Jersey native accomplished the impressive feat on
vault as she became just the third person in all
of NCAA Division-I to score a perfect 10 on vault this year.
In
addition, Weinstein wrapped up the regular season on the highest note
possible in terms of all-around competition. The senior, who had already
broken the Illinois record in the all-around on
Feb. 16 with a 39.6, took it one step further Saturday and set a new
mark of 39.625.
Alina
Weinstein becomes the first Illini to secure three Big Ten Gymnast of
the Week awards in the same season and just the second to capture four
in her career, alongside 2011 alum Allison Buckley.
Weinstein
will look to carry her momentum into the Big Ten Championships this
Saturday on March 23 inside the Jenison Field House in East Lansing,
Mich.
