Bill aims to reform adoption process

SPRINGFIELD -- The international adoption process can take months or years, but advocates hope to speed it up. They say something needs to be done and it looks like some state lawmakers agree.

Rep. Pam Roth (R) wants to eliminate a step she says could help save money and time. It would allow adoption agencies to handle all the necessary paperwork for adoptions and then send it directly to the federal government. Right now, a coordinator at DCFS has to proof it before that happens.

Advocates say it's a redundant step because agencies already handle the job anyway. They say getting rid of it could help shave months off the lengthy process. The sponsor says this bill will likely evolve over time.
