policeDECATUR- Police officers in Decatur could soon be getting more room to fight crime. Right now the sheriff's office and police department share the same building. But today.. people in Macon county came out to find ways to expand it.. while keeping the two working together.
The sheriff's office and just across the hall is the police department. The county is now worried that if one moves and they aren't in the same building anymore it will make their job that much harder. The buildings sub-commitee met today to propose a study to give law enforcement more room. They are looking at the plans now and what they can do to add more parking and office space.
The Macon county sheriff, Jerry Dawson says it's best for the whole community when the sheriff and police can work side by side.
"For the simple things like if you have a question you can walk down there face to face which is always better than talking on the phone, we borrow things from each other we share things and i think anytime we can save tax dollars we should try and do that."
The sheriff says he knows the city is in desperate need for more space and the county is on its way to being in the same situation.  The study would look at the possibility of moving into the building just across the street or even taking some parking from Ameren. The county says it has a lot of options to look into it just hopes it can meet the needs of the city and the county together
