roadBusiness leaders and union workers are calling on the state to double the money it'll spend on roads. The governor is proposing $4 billion dollars. They want $5 billion more or they say we'll lose jobs and people to other states. April Edwards is a construction worker in the Springfield area. She says it doesn't take a road expert to know that our streets need work. "Anybody who drives the interstate or some of the highways around here can tell you, the Capital City is lacking," says Edwards. Edwards is one of hundreds rallying at the statehouse for billions of extra dollars for transporation. They say that money would bring jobs with road projects and safer roads for people in Illinois. State federation AFL-CIO President Michael Carrigan says, "Illinois' transportation system can take a backseat to no one. And so we need a capital bill that continues road projects. We need a capital bill that addresses transit issues." Blagojevich says there's already more than $4 billion in the budget for road projects. And says lawmakers still have to hammer out the final budget. The idea gives hope to construction workers who need more work. Edwards says, "You know all these people want to do is feed their families." The push for this funding has support from both democrats and republicans. Labor leaders say the state has not had a capital bill in eight years. And say the state's transportation system can't wait any longer.
