VILLA GROVE -- The school district is starting to feel the effects of the state's big cuts. The district is losing more than $370,000 in general state aid. On top of that, the district is losing $130,000 in transportation funding.

Leaders are being forced to make tough decisions. Teachers' hours and programs are all on the chopping block.

The district has a proposal involving more than $500,00 in cuts, but nothing's set in stone. The cuts include combining kindergarten and first grade classes. Secretaries would lose hours and a new superintendent and nurse would be hired at cheaper salaries.

The proposal also eliminates junior and high school cheerleading, scholastic bowl and music programs. Everyone is welcome to attend Tuesday night's school board meeting. The superintendent says he really wants to hear everyone's opinion and encourages parents to attend.

Another heated topic involves the school board trying to combine sports teams with Heritage High School. People have been so against it, the board is letting them vote online. You have until March 15 to voice your opinion.
