New details in sexual assault case involving police officer

CHARLESTON -- The victim of an alleged rape by a police officer says the whole ordeal was caught on tape. David Iwaniw faces sexual assault charges.

The 33-year-old is on leave from the Charleston Police Department. Court documents filed Friday include the victim's account. She says they met a few months ago and talked by email and text.

She knew he was a police officer and says he tried using his position of power to his advantage. Iwaniw was hired seven years ago by the department.

Last month, a 17-year-old girl says Iwaniw forced her to have sex in front of a video camera. But the recording captured something else beforehand. The victim says Iwaniw told her to say on camera she was 18-years-old.

She says Iwaniw threatened to hunt her down if she told anyone what happened, and that even if she did, nobody would believe her. But the people he worked with did believe her.

He was arrested a day later and immediately placed on leave. Iwaniw bonded out and is due back in court March 18.

The Coles County State's Attorney handed the case over to the Illinois Appellate Prosecutor's Office. That's because he used to work with the police department while he was Charleston's city attorney.
