UI Board Chairman Defends Decision on Chief Illiniwek

Updated: March 13, 2007
chiefThe U of I board chairman is defending his decision about Chief Illiniwek. Larry Eppley announced the chief's retirement last month without an official vote by the board. He says a vote wasn't needed. On Tuesday, trustees passed a resolution by an 8 to 1 vote making it a board decision to revoke the chief as the U of I's symbol. Eppley says the action was to clear up confusion about the move. He says, "We had to change our plan once people started to call that into question. I never had any issues about whether there was sufficient support on the board or in the university or any legal issues associated with it." As for why the board is passing off other decisions about Chief Illiniwek to the university, Eppley says it's better for the university and students to decide. He says the board's main goal was to end the dance.
