CHAMPAIGN -- Two bank robberies happening only minutes apart and police are still searching for suspects. It all started Friday at 10:30 am. Police were called to an active robbery at Region's Bank on State Street.

Minutes later, another call about another armed robbery at the Champaign County Student Employee Credit Union off Mattis. WCIA-3's Megan Brilley finds out if the hold-ups are related.

Police are trying to determine if the crimes are connected. Hours ago, Region's Bank was surrounded by armed police officers. Little did they know this was just the beginning.

Police say a man walked inside, told everyone he had a gun and demanded money. He took cash and headed north toward University Avenue.

"He's described as a black male, 22-23 years old, somewhere between 5'5" and 5'6", carrying a black book bag, wearing a blue shirt, khaki pants or jeans, gym shoes and a black headband and hood during the robbery."

A woman was taken to an ambulance by stretcher, but police say there were no injuries.

"We didn't get any implication that this person wanted to harm anyone else, but it seems the motive was to get cash."

About ten minutes later, ten squad cars sped off and ended up near the Champaign County Student Employee Credit Union off Mattis. It was just 17-minutes after the Region's robbery and another one was in progress here.

"We certainly have the resources to deal with two things going on at the same time. However, it is complicated."

Police say the man who robbed the credit union showed his gun and demanded money. Now they're searching for yet another suspect.

"The suspect in the South Mattis robbery is described as a black male, about 5'5", 170 pounds, wearing all black including a black stocking cap. We're guessing the age right now to be mid-30's."

Two robberies, two suspects on the loose. Now police need your help. If you know anything about either robbery, call Crime Stoppers. You can remain anonymous and may earn a cash reward.

I am outraged... My daughter called me to tell me her school was on lockdown, but didn't know why. So I panicked and called the school immediately. I was told (and I quote): "I can't tell you what's going on, I'm too busy"
