MONTICELLO -- Students are getting a say in what goes on their school menu. That's because the district's healthy lunches weren't catching on, so they surveyed students.

Chicken is a favorite on the menu. So, school leaders say, starting this week, they're trying to serve more. They're hoping it gets kids to start buying lunches again.

District officials say they had a 10% drop in lunch sales since they switched to a menu meeting new federal nutrition regulations. The superintendent says the change was tough. The new menu cost more and kids weren't buying it. If lunch sales don't pick back up, the district could lose up to $100,000.

That's why a new menu was introduced with healthy food students say they enjoy. It's only been a week, but the district thinks there's already a difference in the lunch lines. Elementary and middle school students are also getting more lunch options.

Zimmerman says they had to make a change. The district is being asked to make more cuts and it couldn't afford to lose that much money on food services.
