UI Board Chief Decision

The U of I Board of Trustees made a decision regarding resolutions involving the use of the name "Chief Illiniwek" and the logo. This morning the board put one final stamp on the chief issue by officially voting to get rid of Chief Illiniwek. The decision to drop the symbol was made last month in a surprise announcement by board chair Lawrence Eppley. Trustees requested a vote to give the issue closure, and that's what they got today. All but one trustee voted to revoke the resolution calling the chief the symbol of the University. They also decided to wash their hands of the matter, and called on Chancellor Richard Herman to decide where the regalia will go, what will happen to the logo that the university still owns, and where the tradition will go from here. A lot of big decisions left for this man to tackle, but the chancellor's office says he's ready. Today marks the conclusion of the concensus process. All they have left to do is approve what the chancellor decides. The second resolution involving former chiefs Dan Maloney and Logan Ponce and their lawsuit against the NCAA was voted down by all but one trustee.
