The Urbana Police Department says the first thing to do in keeping your home and family safe is an obvious, but important tip.

Lock the doors and windows to your home.

Officers say criminals are less likely to break in if there's going to be noise that tips people off.

Make sure you lock your car doors too.

Officer Preston James says if people can get into your vehicle, they might get the key to breaking into your home.

"Who locksyour acutal inside door, inside your garage? Not very many people...but if they have your garage door opener, that's inside your car, they have your house," James says.

Another tip when it comes to your car, don't leave your valuables where people can see them. Expensive thigns like laptops, GPS systems, and purses are more tempting to thieves than an empty seat.
