Campus arson investigated

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS -- A man accused of arson was spotted in the area. Security cameras took several pictures of the suspect near the Oak Street Library Facility in Champaign February 7.

Police say he started a dumpster on fire in the parking lot and then hung around as firefighters put out the flames. Cameras also picked him up in the area. The fire was reported around 9:25 pm.

Sgt. Tom Geis with UIPD said, "Surveillance video in the area also picked the individual up checking the doors of local businesses west of the Oak Street Library facility."

You can see one of the shots below. He's described as 30-40 years old. He was wearing a gray zip-up hooded sweatshirt, dark jeans and black high top boots or shoes.

Police are investigating an arson. It happened about 9:30 pm, Thursday, February 7, at the UI's library facility in the 800-block of South Oak Street. The fire was reported by a passing delivery driver.

When crews arrived on scene, they found a dumpster on fire near the southwest corner of the building. It was put out quickly and there was no damage to the building or surrounding vehicles.

Investigators found video of the suspect lighting the dumpster on fire a half hour before it was discovered. He's described as a large, white male, 30 - 40 years old, with dark hair which appears to be trimmed on the sides, but longer and thinner on top. He was wearing a gray, zippered hoodie, dark jeans and black high-top boots or shoes with light-colored laces.
