Mattoon Police Seeing "Scary Trend"

Updated: March 12, 2007
dxmPolice in Mattoon say they've got a big problem on their hands and no way to really solve it. In the past month, four high schoolers have overdosed on an ingredient in over-the-counter cough syrups. It's commonly called dex or DXM. Last year, a teen in Douglas County died from this drug. His death prompted legislators to make DXM illegal in it's pure form, but police say that doesn't help solve the problem with the over-the-counter meds in recent cases. They're asking lawmakers for help. Walgreen's is one pharmacy that won't sell these drugs to minors. When clerks ring it up, the registers automatically ask for a birthdate. If the person isn't older than 18, they can't buy products with the drug in them. Police say restricting sales or putting products behind the counter are the only way to keep DXM out of kids' hands.
