CHAMPAIGN -- For a lot of us, checking Twitter is part of our daily routine and this week you'll see some special messages from police. They're sending tweets all week preparing students for Unofficial St. Patricks Day.

Officers are sending out tips and reminders to stay safe this weekend using # unofficial. It's the first year they're spreading the word through Twitter. They hope their message reaches students.

"We hope that we influence somebody, somewhere, somehow. I don't know that it's intended to annoy anybody. It's certainly intended just to be a reminder. If they flip through and say, 'oh there's another tweet from the sheriff's office or the police department,' hopefully you catch somebody's attention," Captain Allen Jones said.

Champaign County Sheriff's, University of Illinois Police, as well as officers in Urbana and Champaign will all be tweeting every few hours.
