CHAMPAIGN -- Come rain, sleet or inches of snow and ice, there's one thing thousands would never miss. Despite awful road conditions, fans piled into Assembly Hall Thursday night to support the fighting Illini.

Fans from all over grabbed coats and scarves, heated up the car and made a run for it. One couple drove from Peoria. They say they've been fans since they were toddlers and snow would never stop them from cheering on their team.

"This is our home state and they're showing resurgence here lately. Penn State always plays us tough and we need to be here supporting the guys," Roger Gibbens said.

"They work hard all year long to put forth all the effort. The fans ought to put forth the effort too," Steve Hammel said.

Not all of the fans were able to brave the weather. More than 14,000 tickets were sold, but fewer than 8,000 made it to the game.
