SPRINGFIELD -- One year after Gov. Pat Quinn promised to review and eliminate unnecessary state boards and commissions, the number has grown, according to an investigation by WCIA-3 and the Better Government Association. There are 340 state boards and commissions, according to a website established by the Quinn administration to seek nominations for board vacancies.

An audit of state panels, found that on 38 state boards, members were paid salaries and stipends totaling $8.3 million. That includes the Human Rights Commission.

Each of 12 board members makes $46,960 (the head of the commission makes more).  A 2011 investigation by the BGA found those commissioners worked an average of 13 hours per month.

When the BGA approached the Quinn administration with the numbers, a spokesman promised an in-depth analysis and audit of state boards and commissions. One year after that promise, nothing has happened.

Quinn's spokeswoman says some boards and commissions have been identified for removal and the governor would make those announcements in his budget address March 6.
