URBANA -- City leaders might ease the cost for homeowners dealing with sewer problems. It's a particular issue in the Ellis subdivision.

Pipes underneath dozens of homes are clogged with roots. Homeowners pay for repairs on their properties, but they also have to pay for repairs under city property. Some of those pipes run under the sidewalks and streets in front of their homes.

City leaders are proposing increasing how much homeowners will be reimbursed. But some say the city should cover all costs involving city property.

"The problem is the ordinance needs to be changed so the city will know what their responsibility is and that when these things happen they would automatically take care of their responsibility and that it won't be passed onto the homeowner," said homeowner, Bishop Underwood.

Homeowners are currently reimbursed 50% or up to $3,000. The proposal would raise it to 75% with a new cap at $4,500.
