URBANA -- Federal funds are giving kids a safer way to get to school. It's through Safe Routes for School grant.

City leaders approved the project Monday night. The grant is worth $200,000. The money will create more than eight miles of bike lanes and paths for half a dozen schools in the district.

"It's great for us. I'd rather have the kids riding and walking to school for health reasons. I think it's good for them to get physical activity than sitting on a bus for 25 minutes," said Urbana Middle School principal Scott Woods.

The grant will also add more bike racks. The projects will cost about $171,000 Construction will start this summer.
