City looks to fund non-profits

URBANA -- Every year, the city puts thousands of dollars toward helping local non-profits. City Council members are looking where that money will go.
They have about $313,000 to give away. At Monday night's meeting, they'll discuss which groups will get that money and how much.
The Crisis Nursery is one of many beneficiaries. The group helps local families in need.
That's something city leaders will be considering when trying to divvy up the money. They'll also consider how many people a group is able to help.
Mayor Laurel Prussing wants to develop a way to evaluate how well each non-profit puts that money to use. Last year, Crisis Nursery was given about $22,000 toward its children's program.
Council members will also be discussing how non-profits are chosen. Usually, council members hand-pick the group. Some want to change that process. The meeting starts at 7 pm in council chambers.
Mayor Prussing also wants to invest in early childhood programs. Nearly 200 kids are currently on waiting list for Pre-K or Head Start programs. A lot of those kids come from low-income families.
