CHAMPAIGN -- A new project will force drivers to find a new way through campus-town. The westbound lane of Green, between First and Second streets will close starting Monday.

Construction just started on a new apartment building. The lane closure will give workers a little extra space. Traffic will still run both ways, but the westbound lane will now be in the center turn lane for the one-block section.

People who live in the area are concerned about safety and traffic. Green Street is especially busy during rush hour, lunchtime and any other time people are going in and out of campus. The lane is scheduled to stay closed until November.

Broeren Russo Construction is in charge of the project. The building will be used for student housing with 52-units.

There will also be parking underneath the building and retail space on the ground floor. It's being built on the corner where the White Horse Inn used to be.
