Citizens United Board electricity report

Updated: February 18, 2013
ILLINOIS -- A watchdog group is giving power suppliers high marks, but says there's more that can be done. People living in Illinois saved over $200 million thanks to electricity competition. But the Citizens Utility Board says the short-term savings won't last.

Current problems include misleading pitches, high exit fees and a major market shift. CUB says the solution is to find ways to promote energy efficiency and create money-saving technology. CUB wants Illinoisans to use caution if a marketer asks to see an account number before you decide to sign up, claims to be recommended by the city or state government or offers a lower introductory rate that skyrockets early into the contract.
