DECATUR -- An 18-year veteran with the police department resigned the day after being arrested for theft. Deputy Chief of Police James Chervinko says Matthew Knuckles, a detective with the department's Street Crimes Unit, was arrested Thursday for theft over $500 and official misconduct.

DC Chervinko says the arrest is related to the theft of department-issued funds and falsification of official financial documents. Knuckles bonded out of jail Friday afternoon. He also resigned from the department.

Chief of Police Todd Walker released a statement that the incident was "disheartening," adding, "whenever a police officer commits criminal misconducts, jeopardizes the agency's integrity and violates the public trust, it will be dealt with by my administration swiftly."

The case is still under investigation.
