SPRINGFIELD -- Overcrowding is a problem for prisons around the state and now inmates have to stay in gyms because of it. Watchdog groups wonder what it means for prison safety; not only for guards working there, but inmates as well.

The Department of Corrections told guards the inmates will temporarily move into gyms to help with overcrowding. Six prisons are being affected, including ones in Danville and Centralia.

John Maki, with the John Howard Association, says it's no surprise and it's just another reason major reform is needed. AFSCME, the union representing prison guards, agrees the move will only cause more tension in an already dangerous environment.

Union reps also say the overcrowding is only going to get worse now that the state shut down a few prisons like Dwight. Governor Quinn closed some prisons because he says they were underused and cost taxpayers millions to sit half-empty. Reps from IDOC say minimum security inmates are those who will be housed in gymnasiums, and they will be closely monitored to make sure everyone is safe.
