Cuts could impact state's military readiness

SPRINGFIELD -- The Illinois National Guard is keeping a close eye on congress as it works to stop automatic budget cuts. If they happen next month as scheduled, it would mean big changes for bases like Camp Lincoln.

A major there says they'd probably have to cut some staff and services and could require furlough days. He says, that in turn, could affect the base's readiness when duty calls.

If cuts do kick in March 1, the Department of Defense will lose about $46 billion over the next seven months.
