CHAMPAIGN -- The United Way is turning to hotels around the area to help families in need. The hotel rooms become emergency shelters so families having hard times do not have to split up.

United Way says there's currently a big need because homeless shelters cannot always handle the demand. The pilot program for the United Way will give organizers a better idea of how many families are truly in need before a shelter is built.
