CHAMPAIGN -- Catholic students are getting a real-life history lesson after the pope announced plans to step down. Theology teachers said they're interested to see what will happen.

Each student at St. Thomas More High School takes a religion class. One of those classes was working on a service project Monday, making bracelets for patients at St. Jude.

But later in the year, they'll be following up on how a new pope will be chosen. Teachers said it's something that's already on their syllabus. But now it will be a little different.

"Rather than waiting until the end of the term when I normally introduce the concept of the conclave, we'll be talking about it as it's happening and present the method and we can actually watch it as it happens," said Theology Department Chair Janel Telthorst.

Teachers said they talk about the pope in their lessons each year. They just hope this doesn't all happen during spring break so the students will get to watch and learn. Teachers said they expect this will end up in their own church history books someday.
